How can I install Windows 1.0 Alpha?

Post by lsfer010 »

Hello everyone thanks for the reply on the question of the developer release of Windows 1.0 in May, but this time I want to install the alpha but I can't get it working. These are the steps I did
  • * Insert the diskette number 1 MS-DOS 2.11
    * Ran FDISK
    * Select one and then esc
    * Format c:
    * Yes and formats
    * Comes to booting
    * Put SYS C:
    * Type copy A: \ *.* C: \
    * Insert the second diskette
    * The same step COPY A: \ *.* C: \
    * Comes to booting
    * Insert the first floppy of windows 1.0 alpha and the same steps to copy
    * Make a new folder with Windows MD
    * The same steps of COPY (COPY A: \ *.* C: \ Windows)
    * Insert the second and COPY
    * Insert the 3 and COPY
    * Insert 4 AND COPY
    * Comes to booting
    * Writing C: \ Windows
    * Then INSTALL
After this nothing happens. How do I install it correctly?

Hey lsfer010, I can't help with your issue, but I've translated a bit more of your post into English, it looks like you're using Google Translator or similar tool to translate - there's a few grammatical errors and non-translated words.

I have tried to install Windows 1.0 Alpha on DosBox.
Using DosBox command "IMGMOUNT DRIVE [imagefile] -t floppy" i mounted .IMG files and copied setup files from them to C:\WINDOWS
Then i typed DosBox command "ver set 2 11" to have DOSBox reporting DOS 2.11 as version number.
C:
CD WINDOWS
INSTALL

Use first display driver

WIN

Of course, it works with other VM and emulators.

Try PCem or PCE-ibmpc:

http://thecake.doesntexist.org/public/M ... 0Alpha.zip (was pre-installed, Daniel's version)
Online periodically.

Maybe you had forgotten to use "ver set"? Also, install in folder on C, not in root.

I installed at C:\WIN\WIN1ALPHA\INSTALL.
Edit:I used ver set.

I tried again - it works fine in any folder and even without "ver set" (by default DosBox reports "DOS 5.00")

Well, Download link: unpacked installer + pre-installed Windows

Mount the folder in which the Windows folder is situated. For example, if you extract my archive in D:\
mount c d:\windows1alpha
c:
cd windows
win

He was using DOSBox 0.73 instead of 0.74. The files i downloaded work great on 0.74.
