Try extracting the floppy disk image from Microsofts virtual PC 2003 SP1

have you tried MSCDEX.EXE ? that and I've had the same issue (gave up though.) Is there a CD-ROM version out there by a chance?

So, I don't need the driver anymore, but now I have a new problem, when I'am boot up the nt 3.51 setup and inserted the second diskette comes the bootscreen and nothing happens. I have to boot up by diskettes because when I'm booting up by the CD-ROM Windows setup say, I have to make three startup disks.

You can override the floppy check. Just use "winnt.exe /b" or "setup.exe /b" instead of just "winnt.exe" or "setup.exe".

But that's my problem, I can't started the setup with parameters, because I have no DOS cd-rom drivers , so I have to boot directly from the cd

also with the cd-driver the bootscreen hang after the dos-part of the setup, I think VMware can't emulate nt 3.51 and some other longhorn builds.

I have succesfully ran 3.51 on VMWare. What version of VMWare are you using?

For a DOS 6.22 cdrom driver, use OAKCDROM.SYS (google it)

put OAKCDROM.SYS on the disk and
add to config.sys:

Code: Select all

DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001
add to autoexec.bat:

Code: Select all

MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001

Nice Windows 3.11+NT hybrid
Does it have boot last success config in boot options ?
Tip: you can mount virtual HDD from VM into readwrite mode.
But be careful: if it NTFS - 7 convert it to modern NTFS revision and you lost your NT.
So, if your VHHD is FAT, attach it and seek the backups of registry file. In NT 5.x systems it was a c:\windows\repair; try to restore SYSTEM file. In NT 5.x systems it was a c:\windows\system32\config\system

I haven't tried Netscape, but if you have all the various updates (SP5, plus some additional ones, common controls update, etc) then you can run Firefox 2, which is much more modern -

It was from this package, I think probably the ones from the 3.0 > Normal folder but if not try the 2.0 ones.

And if that does not work, you can always try this driver, which works on ALL Windows versions of the NT family (NT, 2000, XP, 2003, not tested on either longhorn, vista or 7)

Hmmm... Seems it can't find the C runtime library.. Perhaps the PATH variable isn't set correctly?

I'm not sure how stuff works on Win3.x, so don't blame me if it goes wrong, but try removing the .; from the path variable.

Also, check the directories it mentions to see if the C runtime library is actually there (msvcrt.dll)

It's now a couple of days I'm trying to install NT 3.51 on Vmware, so far, no luck. I am using Vmware 6/7 under Windows 7.
I get up to the first reboot, when it boots, it always show twice the amount of memory I have set, then it freezes.
I have tried many different configurations but nothing still ... I tried to go from 3.1 to 3.5/3.51 but they all freeze the same.

Can you tell what settings you have chosen ?

Thanks !

oh, good question, I'm sitting here on a crusie ship, but I think, when you qant to create the vm choose advanced mode, then vmware 6.5 and in the operating system drop down list windows nt, the vhd as ide, then install msdos 6.22 and a cd.-om driver. Then start the setup of nt 3.1 and insatll it, on my pc it works. Then upgrade nt 3.1 to 3.51 and insatll the latest service pack.
