XADM: Information Store Stops Responding and You Receive "No Disc in the Drive" Error Message

PSS ID Number: 327342

Article Last Modified on 9/6/2002

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

This article was previously published under Q327342

SYMPTOMS

Users may not be able to connect to your Exchange Server system, and the information store may stop responding (although the service does not quit). Additionally, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

store.exe - no disc. There is no disc in the drive, please insert the disc into drive A.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if Trend Micro's ScanMail version of ESE.dll (Extensible Storage Engine) is installed on your computer. The original version of this file is generally replaced during the installation of ScanMail for Exchange 2000 Server. The affected DLL file contains faulty code, which truncates a Domain Defined Attribute (DDA) string, and then interprets it as a call to drive A.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, either remove ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 or contact Trend Micro, Inc. for an updated version of ESE.dll.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, click Abort when you receive the message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article. Note that this will only temporarily restore the functionality of the information store, and you must either remove ScanMail or update the affected files to permanently fix this issue.
