SYMPTOMS

When you start a Microsoft Word 2002 task from the Task Launcher in Microsoft Works Suite, you may receive an error message similar to the following

Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Word can try to recover it for you. The document 'template.wiz' caused a serious error the last time it was opened. Would you like to continue opening it?

where template.wiz is the name of the template file that you are trying to open.

Or, a blank document may open instead of the expected template.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Norton AntiVirus software is installed on your computer, and the Norton AntiVirus Plug-In for Microsoft Office is enabled.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate to your version of Norton AntiVirus.

Norton AntiVirus 2000: Unregister the OfficeAV.dll Plug-in

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type OfficeAV.dll.
  3. In the Look in box, click the hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed, and then click Find Now.
  4. In the list of found files, note the path for the OfficeAV.dll file in the In Folder column. By default, this file is located in the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus

  5. Click Start, and then click Run.
  6. In the Open box, type the following line (including the quotation marks), and then click OK

    regsvr32 /u "path\officeav.dll"

where path is the path that you noted in step 4.
  7. Click OK in response to the following message:

    DllUnregisterServer in path\OfficeAV.dll succeeded.

Norton AntiVirus 2002: Disable the Office Plug-in

  1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
  2. Click Options, and then click Miscellaneous.
  3. In the How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected section, click to clear the Enable Office Plug-in check box.
  4. Click OK, and then quit Norton AntiVirus.

MORE INFORMATION

When you follow the steps in the "Norton AntiVirus 2000: Unregister the OfficeAV.dll Plug-in" section of this article to disable the OfficeAV.dll plug-in, the plug-in no longer scans documents for macro-virus infections.

However, the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect feature continues to provide ongoing protection by scanning any file that you run, download, open, create, or delete.
