Linux Mint is a Linux distro with two versions: Linux Mint, based on Ubuntu, and LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition), based on Debian.[1] As early as December 2006, the Linux Mint team described as its feature the inclusion of patented or proprietary technologies, unlike distros that adhere to free software philosophies.[2]

Previously, beginning 2.2 "Bianca", Linux Mint came with a "Light Edition". Unlike the main version, this version did not contain proprietary software. patented technologies, and support for restricted formats. The "Light Edition" was intended for users in countries where legislation allows enforcement of software patents.[3][4]
