[OFFER] Microsoft Office 4.2 Standard [Japanese] [Upgrade]

Post by yksoft1 »

I got this via a friend in Japan.
It contains 33 3.5' 1.25M PC-98 format disks for Office itself, 2 disks for MS-IME 2 and 6 disks for 3 Ricoh TrueType fonts.
I only got the disks, no boxes or manuals.

I got it installed in Anex86 (Graphics glitch is caused by Anex86's bug in PEGC 256-color mode emulation).

It was intended to upgrade Office 1.5 Japanese or Excel 5.0 Japanese, however the first floppy qualifies as valid upgrade source.

Oh, nice! :)

I assume this would work on PC as well, with a 3-mode floppy?

I dumped these disks using a 3-mode USB drive.

Yeah, but I doubt you could read them using DOS+Windows 3.x, as you'd need a BIOS that can read 1024 bytes per sector, and from what I know, most PC-compatible BIOS'es can't.

For a real old PC, you will need both a 3-mode compatible drive and a motherboard which BIOS supports 3-mode.

And a BIOS which can read 1024 bytes per sector, as 3-mode per se simply means it supports 3.5" floppies at 360 rpm instead of 300 rpm. Most PC-compatible BIOS'es can only read 512 bytes per sector and DOS just uses the BIOS, so reading such floppies will fail with a Sector not found error.

Edit: And to fool DOS to recognize media type ID 0xFE as valid.

You should try to buy an old DOS/V based PC sold in Japan as its BIOS would have high probability for fully 3-mode support.

(Or just crack the installer to get around the upgrade check)

PCem does support 3-mode floppy mode just fine if anyone wants to know.

You don't need any 1.25MB floppy disk. To install, just copy all files of Disk 1 to an empty floppy disk with the volume label WOFF42_J_U1, run the installer from hard disk (files from each disk must be put in directories named like "Disk1" "Disk2"), insert and select the floppy disk you made when the installer asks for the path of an upgradable version.
If you don't know how to extract files from 1.25MB raw floppy images, use the tool DiskExplorer.
Image
Of course you must use Japanese Windows (The "English with Japanese support" version of Windows 3.1 also works) or the installer will fail.

Even that's so, there also remains the problem of DOS not recognizing an 1.25 MB disk's media type ID 0xFE as valid, and therefore issuing an Invalid media type error. This is what happend in PCem when I got around the sector size limitation. Though I am going to try to do the same in DOS/V next and see what happens.

It's not mine per se, I found it online and since we don't have it on the FTP yet, I thought I'd upload it.
