Difference between Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8?

Post by lilysmith22 »

Hello All,

I've been wondering, what's the difference of these two other than it utilized for servers, it supports more RAM, and it is more costly. What is the reason for these Operating system? Does the Windows server 2012 has the all the features that Windows 8 have? :?

It has most of the Windows 8 features , however there are some major differences.
  • It allows for more configuration options. For instance , in Server , you can choose to not include desktop features , essentially making it a bare-bones base for enhanced security(you'll see only CMD). This is not possible in Windows 8 , where you are left with all desktop features.
It includes important server-related tools like Server Manager , again not possible in Windows 8.
It is available only for 64-bit. Windows 8 is available in 32-bit as well.
It utilizes a different licensing system.
It allows you to actually remove full features from the OS. In Windows 8 , you can only 'disable' them through Windows Features.
It has a smaller overall footprint especially on Server Core.
Hope this helps you.

@ Ft access thanks for the suggestion, but what you think which one is more useful and easily accessible for an entrepreneur.

You need to read about what the "Active Directory" and "Domain Controller" are. Somhow, nobody said anything about those here, and there are the main features that define the difference between "client" and "server".

Hello, thanks for letting me know about this but can you provide me the specific data for this cos I had searched for the two suggested terms but didn't get any proper info.

If you're not vaguely familiar with these terms already, you almost certainly don't need Windows Server. Use Windows 8.

I doubt you really looked as both are explained in detail on Wikipedia and tons of other sites.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Directory
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_controller

Also, if you read about Windows Server for example you will see a lot of features not available in a client OS

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Server_2012

It's all there if you only take your time to do a basic search. Microsoft has extensive information about all sections, so does Wikipedia and countless other sites that reviews both client and server operating systems.

But for your needs you definately don't need a server OS, especially since you're not vague familiar with what a server OS does. You are a client, so you need a client OS. A server OS serves you in terms of data storage, data services and security.
