This was already discussed here, but I believe making a tutorial would make it easier to find.
By default, Windows/386 2.x will crash during start up due to an unsupported DOS version.
Here's how to fix it:
1. Take your Windows/386 2.x disk images or floppies and dump all their contents to a folder. We'll name it a.
2. Make a new folder named c.
3. Mount the a folder as the a drive in DOSBox, and mount the c folder as the c drive in DOSBox.
4. Switch to the a drive, and run setup.
5. Once finished set the version using the ver set command to 3 30.
6. There is no 6. You are done! Now have fun with your Windows/386 2.x installation! Run win86.
Note: win386 does not work, shows HMA error. If anyone gets it working, post it here and I will add it to this post.
Thanks, and hope this guide is useful

Running win86.com makes it run in Real Mode, just like Windows 1.x and 2.03. Wouldn't this defeat the purpose of specifically installing the 386 version of Windows 2?

When I installed Win386 2.x using VPC 2007, it also gave me an error when running win386, and I had to run win86. :/

Re: (Tutorial) Windows/386 2.x in DOSBox
You can use DOSBox-x to mount a floppy image with MS-DOS 3.3x (or PC-DOS 3.30 as well) to install Windows/386 2.x (from 2.01 to 2.11) on a hard disk image and, then, mount it on the emulator (but knowing its cylinder size as here: -size 512,63,16,X <- where X is the cylinder size, through the imgmount command).
Mounting the hard disk image requires the "boot" command with either "-l c" or the name of the hard disk image (i.e.: vhd.img). This solves the Protected Mode problem (win386.exe).
