Microsoft "Hinting" at Aero Glass Return

Post by giantsteen »

Should aero live or die? What do you think? Personally, I think Aero is so 10 years ago...putting Metro with an Aero-Glass like UI is just a disaster waiting to happen.

One of the most noticeable changes introduced with Windows Vista was the translucent Aero Glass theme. It introduced a level of depth that XP only provided in the form of dropdown shadows. Aero then greatly improved in Windows 7, offering even more shiny transparency across the desktop user interface.

Microsoft moved away from the Aero theme with the launch of Windows 8 and its flat, Modern UI designed language, previously known as “Metro”, but with the software giant’s renewed focus on customer feedback with Windows 10, there is a good chance of Aero making a comeback, provided enough people vote for it that is.

WinBeta recently unveiled that internally, Microsoft was talking about bringing Aero back in Windows 10, so it looks like your votes do matter. But as Aul said, make sure you keep voting, the Redmond giant will only bring it back if there is high-enough demand for it!

If you would like to see Aero come back to Windows, Microsoft’s Gabriel Aul suggests you head over to the Windows Feedback app in the Windows Technical Preview, and ‘Me too’/vote for one of the many requests to bring back the theme. You’ll find most of the requests in the Personalization category.

YES, PLEASE. WE NEED IT. Like seriously, I've waited so long to see that transparent Windows Bar to come back.

Why judge the quality of something on age? Oh well, your opinion...

Even if it looks "so 10 years ago" it still looks better than the uglyness that is the Windows 8 UI imo.

I have a few friends who will love the return of Aero Glass, but personally all I really want is proper Windows Classic back (with the thin taskbar and window borders) - less screen real estate on eye candy and huge title bars, more space for applications to draw stuff...

I'd say if they were to implement aero again it'd be sorta like the glass in OS-X Yosemite. Which would be rather nice

its anything but old
dunno why kids these days have ways to decide what is the next thing...

metro is ugly as hell - get over it
and if aero is 10 old for you then what is metro if not windows 1.0 style ??? - when was that ?

Haters...

Look, guys, Aero isn't much old, and Metro isn't ugly. If you don't like it, turn it off. (Well, unless you're on Windows 8 9200-9600) Metro is fine. But Aero is going to be a over-welcomed feature to get back.

I for one would like Aero to come back , with fallback options to Windows Classic and the Metro theme.

I thought monochrome windows/title bars were old with the invention of 98, and ugly square ones were old since the invention of Xp.

There was metro glass with Win 8 CP and DP, and a few other pre-release 8 builds.

As long as MS implements an Aero theme for the Metro interface and allows us to switch between 'Modern' (Windows 8+) and 'Aero' (Windows Vista/7) styles, I fully support it.

They already have the code, they may as well. I wouldn't make it the default Windows theme again though.

If M$ just made it looks like the Aero Lite theme off of 7989, I'd be grateful. That's the only thing remotely close to Metro I like, even though it's actually the early Metro theme.

Better than regular Windows 8 theme, but I would prefer full Aero.

Aero in some of those beta builds of win8 look pretty cool, I would totally use that as a theme. It kind of had the best of both worlds- metro and Aero glass

I'm on the fence about Aero, it's nice and shiny but resource intensive on devices with less than 1.5-2 GB of ram.

its not intensive at all
people mistake this so very much !!!

the only thing that "drains" resources is BLUR ! nothing else !!!

1. win 8 also uses PNG alpha transparency resources just like Vista and 7
2. win 8 ALSO uses BLUR (hello taskbar !!!)

if they really wanted Light OS aka "non intensive" to keep crappy tablets battery long
they would use ordinary UXTHEME engine (aka XP theme engine) and not DWM

you just got served MS BS and you swallowed it

That would result in higher battery drain.

A GPU is far more efficient than a CPU for rendering Windows, so offloading the task of window management to the GPU will result in a lower power draw than having to rely on the CPU to do it.

Though I do concede that MS overstate the difference between Win7's "Aero" and Win8's metro-ised theme. It makes next to no difference with regards to battery life.

If Areo were to return to Windows 10 it would almost make me consider moving from Windows 7.
It should at very least be an option to be able to choose Aero as a theme if Microsoft still want to go down the Merto road...

I found this on BuildFeed yesterday: https://buildfeed.net/actions/info/908/

Does this "FBL_CDE" thing have anything to do with DWM or Aero?

Yes, Aero and Aero Glass should be return, just look at the votes in the Windows Feedback app, this is the most wanted feature to be returned!
I like the Windows Classics theme to be returned too!
