[RELEASE] Windows 8 Metro Remover

Post by Pwned »

Windows 8 Metro Remover will help to patch your Windows 8 installation to completely remove the Metro interface and return back the Windows 7 features.

It will save your hard drive space, because anything Metro, including the applications will be removed.
You will have a Start Menu, made by the Classic Shell developers.
Meanwhile, you will have all the security features available in Windows 8

Very Nice! Thanks. I'll be combining this with no activation, no timebomb, and defaulting to desktop. :)

Just being curious, have you already made the tweaks that do the following?

Yeah, I have. No activation by not activating, which causes the 2 hour restart not to kick in. No timebomb by removing the timebomb. I also added back in the .Net Framework. Defaulting to Desktop was an accident, not even sure how I did it. I think is a way you can do it if you search google for it. Not sure though.

Do you think you will be able to get it to work with the RP?

Out of curiosity, if we're going to remove 99% of what's different about Windows 8, why not just keep using Windows 7? Aside from Metro and a few tweaks here and there, there's really nothing very different...

Well, people like to be current, so they will
1) Buy Windows 8.
2) Completely remove features unique to Windows 8, therefore making it more of a Windows 7.
3) Still have bragging rights about having the latest and greatest.

I announce that the project is now renamed to Windows 8 Metro Remover, and in the future releases will patch Windows 8 to remove Metro completely.

I can already see Brazilian pirates selling pirate Win8 with this injected. And i can pretty much everyone in school saying stuff like "Hurr Durr, you lied about the Metro thing." 8-) Not insulting the patch though, it's certainly going to be useful.

The application has been updated to version 1.0 and currently works on Release Preview in x86 architecture. For now, only removes the overlays.

Now Metro Remover also removes everything Metro, not just overlays. Version 1.1 coming soon. ;)

EDIT: There are some problems with initialization preloader. As soon as they are resolved, I'm publishing this.

I believe that there is a measurable difference in RAM usage. Can you test it at your next release?

Wow, hope we'll see this in the release version of Windows 8 also, because I really cant stand the new look of W8. If something like that is not possible I'll be happy to stay on W7. :)

Version 1.1 is released, and now disables Metro. This works flawlessly on my PC, but it can fail on different configurations.
If you're willing to test, please PM me. I will tell you the password for the program. You should only test this on virtual machine. Then you:
  • See if Metro is really disabled
  • Restart the virtual machine and see if it's disabled this time too
  • What did you see after logging on (a screen capture of the VM would be nice)

I don't see why people would spend money on something they don't like just to downgrade it to something they may already have and do like. Honestly it would be both easier and better just to get some free programs that add back the other little functionality there is. It's hard to brag about having the latest and greatest when you remove most the things that make it what it is.
