Windows CE ISO's?

Post by LeaflameSD »

I know that Windows CE isn't the most used system, but I wanted to know if there is any ISO's of the Windows CE (Embedded Compact) out there that anyone has, or is is just pre-installed in a PDA or something. Since I'm new here I don't know if this is a violation or whatnot, but hey... me and you are friends, right?

You can download a trial of the Windows CE Platform Builder and roll your own x86 runtime image. Don't ask me how to do that though, since I have no idea.

I highly doubt there are any ISO's of WinCE. Windows CE is available as a .bin file or as a VHD, but making a bootable DOS CD and inserting contents from the VHD would probably work.

One doesn't simply "obtain a CE ISO".

CE is an embedded system, you build an image to your requirements.

I think this needs to be done in Platform Builder. I don't know since i don't use it.

As said, Windows CE came as an SDK of sorts with Platform Builder being the interface to build a system. It was more or less a tree-view of options for your system build and a few build parameters, then you click "build" and it made a disk image. I have the disks for 2.12 and 3.0.

Starting with CE 3.0 MS gave you "important" parts of the CE source code as shared source.
Still not enough for my Windows Mobile plans.
Stephen Elop….I curse you, that after your death your soul will be forever trapped in the sourcecode of Windows and one day Microsoft will fall because of that virus code!

it sounds like you want to build what is known as the CEPC ... which you boot up with msdos then fire up a bootloader which loads the CE.bin image into ram, and you run from there... I prefer 2.11 over 3/4 but its... barren.. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for.

Or nk.bin. But you won't be able to do a lot of things except of using Wordpad or else. Better load a few CAB apps by making a .bin by yourself.

CE3 includes such things like that, or even better IE .. which is horrible on the CE platform...

I think its CE 4 or 5 that will let the cepc mount the hard disk.. but yeah even writing programs for CE x86 is a pain, as the CEPC can't run the x86 "emulator" exe's... I've had good luck with the 2.11 platform builders compiler but that.. is a long and boring story. lol

Yeah looking at a blank desktop where the only 'application' is a console, the options are control pannel & shutdown probably won't be all that exciting for you...

This is because the EXEs meant to run in an emulator have RPC calls to libraries on the host machine, where on a real system, they are IPC calls.

There are no ISOs for Windows CE here at the BetaArchive. But you can Google Search for "Windows CE Platform Builder" if you want.

I tried mounting the disk from the CE5 VM but didn't have any luck at all. It was based on Caldera DR-DOS and i downloaded it from HPC:Factor (the VHD).
