Windows 3.1 Update Collection.

Post by MBaNL »

Since Windows 3.x is my most favorite Windows version and updates are becoming less easy available I would like to create a topic with all the updates ever existed including a download link. I know I'ts more an "Download offer" topic in the first place but I also hope on a real discussion topic, so that is why I decided to place it here.

The updates are place in chronological order, the date is decided by the latest filedate in the updatepackage.

You will also find other items as updates, these are ONLY from Microsoft... no other downloads could be found in this list.

If there is no language code with the download link it is either multilingual or only brought out in English...

Updates for win3.x?
How where they spread to the users? I thought they used to release new floppy sets back then which you could get on request, kind of like sp integrated dvds today.

Back in the days there were BBS'es (they were not only used for pirated stuff ;-)) and FTP servers... Mail orders with a floppy was also a possibility.

Thanks for this offer. I will try my best to make these work in my Windows 3.1 20th Anniversary Project.

A common source for Win31 updates was via magazine floppy. Not all of these were thus available, but enough were. cdroms on magazines also helped.

The speaker driver was the greatest thing ever! ... back then though I had a CGA system, so I had to install 3.0 then upgrade to 3.1... but my 286-16 could happily play most stuff!

I heard of this driver back in the days but never got my hand in it. In the time we got internet (14K4 modem) it wasn't nessacary anymore because of the Creative Sound Blaster cards we bought (we've started with one PC but soon after that we always had at least two pc's). Since last week I came around this was an original Microsoft driver, that part was new to me.

If someone knows more updates I like to add them! So this topic won't die while I'm a BA member. ;-)

The most reliable sources for Win16-Updates:

1. Windows NT 3.51 Server-CD

Restriction:
Only networking components

Details:
See the KB article Q131035 (Updated Network Client Files Included with
Windows NT 3.51)

Addition:
There are also current versions of LAN-Manager clients (DOS, OS/2 etc.),
very usefull for boot-floppies with network access (installion or disk-
imaging purposes).

2. MS Year 2000 Resource CD

There are different editions (Pre-release, August 1999, October 1999) in
different languages. But concerning Win16 the date shouldn't matter...

Contains updates for the filemanager, keyboard drivers and TrueType-fonts
(the letter because of the Euro symbol). These files are also applicable to
Win-OS/2 - however, install them manually! (I recommend to do so in anyway,
because these self-extracting routines are commonly buggy to wave the flag.)

3. MS Software-Library

ftp.microsoft.com\Softlib\Mslfiles

Hints:
The index.txt is not (and it never was) very accurate, but incomplete,
and involves a lot of nonsense descriptions...
Some stuff is archived twice under different names...
There are newer and older versions without any cross reference...
etc. etc.

The following list (in alphabetical order) is checked and revised by myself.

Because of the forum software doesn't preserve given text-formats like tabs etc. i decided to put the list in a an attached pdf-file. But it seems now that pdf is not an allowed file-format for the Uploader. Can somebody tell me how to deal with that situation, please?
Thanks.

The link is posted above (ftp.microsoft.com\Softlib\Mslfiles).
But it's quite a pain in the ass. More than 2000 files... Good luck!
