Windows Phone 8 was the first version of Windows Phone to be built on the NT kernel, merging Windows 8 and Phone ecosystems into one. It was released on October 29 2012. Since the release of Windows Phone 8, there have been 3 updates:


General Distribution Release 3 was not supposed to be something that Microsoft had planned , but it was released because of the delay on releasing Windows Phone 8.1 at that time.

Windows Phone 8.1 , which was announced in Microsoft's Build Conference in San Francisco on April 2 2014 and was released to developers on April 15 2014 , adds a slew of new features, including tighter integration with the cloud , Action Center as well as the Microsoft Account system and other updates. On August 4 2014, the first update to Windows Phone 8.1 has been distributed to developers participating in the Windows Phone Preview for Developers program.
