Windows Phone 8 was the first version of Windows Phone to be built on the NT kernel, merging Windows 8 and Phone ecosystems into one. Since the release of Windows Phone 8, there have been 3 updates:

General Distribution Release 3 was not supposed to be something that Microsoft had planned. In Summer 2013, Microsoft announced that the release of Windows Phone 8.1 (Blue) had to be delayed until 2014. It was not known until recently that the release date for Windows Phone 8.1 would be during the second quarter of 2014.

Windows Phone 8.1 adds a slew of new features, including tighter integration with the cloud and the Windows NT ecosystem, as well as the Microsoft Account system.
