Windows Longhorn/6.0.4008.main.030219-1933

From BetaArchive Wiki

Windows "Longhorn" build 4008 (with a build tag of 6.0.4008.main.030219-1933) is a Milestone 4 "Longhorn" build that was privately handed out to a restricted group of developers and then leaked on February 28, 2003[1][2][3] after some months of discretion by Microsoft.

It includes the old and new plex themes but DCE is heavily broken.

This build was a major update from Build 3718, with one of the most dramatic changes obviously being the introduction of the new WIM-based Setup procedure, albeit still in a very interesting stage. This build also had many updates made in the folder windows, although the rest of the build had not changed so much from Build 3718, however, it was quite clear that Microsoft had already started adding in the major changes that would later make Longhorn what it was.

This build also had (with exception to the Help and Support Center) nearly all references, and virtually all major references to Windows XP removed by this point, most notably the logo shown within the About Windows dialog box, which was replaced by the actual Longhorn logo, showing the copyright date, 2006 (this shows that obviously, Microsoft was planning quite far ahead for Longhorn even at this point). The boot screen was still the same from Windows XP, but that was also going to be removed eventually.

As with earlier Longhorn builds, the Internet Explorer included in this build, Internet Explorer 6.05 (basically, an update to Internet Explorer 6.0), was not much different from the Internet Explorer included by default in Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.

Hidden Sidebar tiles

A few Sidebar tiles are disabled by default in this build. These are:

  • RMA Test Tile - just the "Longhorn" clock png stretched in the tile. RMA means "rich minimized application", referring to applications that a user could pin as a transient tile when it is minimized. The minimized application in the sidebar can provide basic functionality of the application without consuming excessive space. An example of an RMA with a transient tile would have been Windows Media Player,[19][20] which is hidden in this build. This tile may be activated by the following registry entry:[21]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\RMA Test Tile]
"AssemblyName"="Microsoft.Windows.Client"
"Friendly Name"="RMA Test"
"Type"="System.Windows.Desktop.RMATestTile"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\Longhorn Status]

"AssemblyName"="ShellInterop"
"Friendly Name"="Longhorn Status"
"Type"="System.Windows.Desktop.SharePointTile"
  • Internet Webcam - links to a live traffic camera image of Washington State Route 520 (SR 520) and 124th Avenue in Redmond, Washington, United States of America. The link used by the tile in build 4008 is dead, but the camera remains active. This tile is similar to the Traffic ticket from Sideshow, a prototype of Sidebar from Microsoft Research. This tile may be activated by the following registry entry:[21]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\Internet WebCam]

"AssemblyName"="ShellInterop"
"Friendly Name"="Internet WebCam"
"Type"="System.Windows.Desktop.StartBarInternetTile"
  • Media Player - which is broken. This tile may be activated by the following registry entry:[21]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\{8424cd74-e3d3-4bc7-87ad-15f569922c1a}]

"AssemblyName"="ShellInterop"
"Friendly Name"="Windows Media Player"
"Type"="System.Windows.Desktop.WMPTile"
  • Messenger Status Tile - This tile only works with Windows Messenger 4.6 or 4.7, not MSN Messenger nor Windows Messenger 4.0. This tile may be activated by the following registry entry:[citation needed]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartBar\Modules\{62F329E0-B71B-4DDA-8323-628AC066531D}
AssemblyName = Microsoft.Windows.PPLRTC1
Friendly Name = Messenger Status
Type = MS.Internal.Communications.Controls.MeTile

A registry patch by AlphaAddict also enabled the RMA Test, Longhorn Status, Internet Webcam, and Windows Media Player tiles in 2006, but the download link no longer works.[citation needed]
