Windows Longhorn Milestone 3 Build 3683 is a Lab06 build compiled on October 23, 2002. It is the first build of Windows Longhorn leaked to the public, and demonstrated the direction Microsoft was headed at the time. Due to the operating system being so early in the development process, only a small number of changes were observed from Windows XP.
New features include the Plex visual style, a Desktop Settings applet based on Avalon, the Windows Sidebar, Internet Explorer 6.05, and a new Preview Pane.
It is incompatible with certain applications that require Windows XP to run. Most of the compatibility issues can be solved by running these applications in Compatibility Mode. In addition, programs which require a Service Pack can be made to run by editing the CSDVersion key in the Windows Registry.
Although stable compared to later builds of the OS, Windows Explorer crashes frequently, and the process will occasionally fail to terminate while ending the computer session.
