Windows 8.1 (codenamed Windows Blue) is a free update for the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system. It is version 6.3 of the NT kernel.

Tami Reller, corporate vice president and chief financial officer of the Microsoft Windows division, announced the release of the Windows 8.1 Developer Preview during the Build Windows conference in June, 2013.

Enhancements have been made to the overall Windows 8 experience, including the reinstatement of the Start button, unified search results, new Start screen customization options, and horizontal application snapping improvements.

Windows 8.1 also includes new Alarm, Calculator, Movie Moments, and Sound Recorder applications. Some of the other new features available in this update include Internet Explorer 11, and a Modern version of File Explorer.
