Windows 8.1 (codenamed Windows Blue) is an update to Windows 8. It's rumored that the update will be free of charge. Development started in late 2012/early 2013. The kernel version, as seen in leaked builds, has changed to 6.3, proving it is not a major update.

Tami Reller, leader of the Windows Division at Microsoft, announced the release of the Windows 8.1 Developer Preview during the //build conference in June 2013.

Included in this new version of Windows is a MovieMoments app, Alarm app, Calculator app, and a Sound Recorder app, not seen in Windows 8. Other changes include Internet Explorer 11, and the re-addition of the Start Button (not to be confused with the Start Menu). A new "All Apps" button will be included on the start screen, as well as a newer way to "Search" through apps and files. My Computer has been renamed to "This PC"

One build shown on the web remains unleaked, and that is 9379, and the fakes on the web include builds 9375, 9388, 9404.
