The Project Manager of Windows 1, ''Tandy Trower'', [http://technologizer.com/2010/03/08/the-secret-origin-of-windows/2/ stated]: ''"But by the early summer of 1985, we were still not close to being done, so Steve declared we should release a preliminary release that I dubbed the "Premiere Edition", which we provided to key application vendors, analysts, and members of the press for feedback and in partial fulfillment of Ballmer’s promise to ship the product that summer."''

According to ''Trower'', the memory management code of the operating system needed to be rewritten at a later point in development: ''"Then just at the point I was starting to feel more optimistic about wrapping things up the architect of the memory management code told me he found a critical defect in its design and would need to re-write it, basically rendering all testing to date useless. I pleaded with him to find an easier way, but after a thorough discussion there was no option other than to let him proceed and restart the testing process."''

A screenshot once purported to be of the Premiere Edition was later proven to be fake, being only the result of a few modifications made to files in the RTM version of the operating system.

BA member trueyanksfan has the original floppy disks of this version and showed pictures(shown here on the right) on the forum. It was later revealed that only the 4th disk has survived , with the other 3 disks accidentally overwritten.
According to the thread linked below, this appears to actually be an RC of 1.01 rather than the Premiere Edition.
===Alias' 7/30 copy (2014)===
A [http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33024 picture] of the floppy set of this and the boot screen of this surfaced on November 30, 2014 posted by BA member Alias. It leaked on December 18, 2014.
===The 'fake' 8/17 release (2007/8)===
A 'copy' of Windows 1 PE was released to the Euro-Asian Beta Group by ''betaguy224'' and ''OBattler'', and later to [[BetaArchive]] by ''Namronia''. The build recieved was fake, as the kernels of the leaked build, and Windows 1.01 were the same.  This build was being debated on [[BetaArchive]] and was so far proven to be fake, until the real PE leaked on December 2014.
Until some time(when it was removed from the FTP because it was fake - [http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=29459 see this thread]) before the real PE leaked , this was the only copy available on the FTP.
===The 8/20 release (2007)===
[http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=2997 This] topic mentions a 'copy' of PE that was dated August 20, 1985. The authenticity of this is still unclear, but it is likely to be fake as the sizes of the kernels of 1.01 and this were identical.

Premiere Edition is a preliminary release of the Microsoft Windows 1.0 operating environment, which shipped to testers in July 1985 to provide an early look at the Windows product, before the final product was finished and ready to be shipped. The final release was Windows 1.01.

Quoting Tandy Trower (Microsoft Windows 1.0 product manager): "But by the early summer of 1985, we were still not close to being done, so Steve declared we should release a preliminary release that I dubbed the "Premiere Edition", which we provided to key application vendors, analysts, and members of the press for feedback and in partial fulfillment of Ballmer’s promise to ship the product that summer." According to Trower, the memory management code of the operating system needed to be rewritten at a later point in development:

"Then just at the point I was starting to feel more optimistic about wrapping things up the architect of the memory management code told me he found a critical defect in its design and would need to re-write it, basically rendering all testing to date useless. I pleaded with him to find an easier way, but after a thorough discussion there was no option other than to let him proceed and restart the testing process."
