FIX: The logins are incorrectly deleted when you run a SQL Server 2005 Integration Services package that contains a Transfer SQL Server Objects task

Article ID: 945323

Article Last Modified on 12/3/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition for Itanium-based Systems

Bug: #50002090 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You create a SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS) package that contains a Transfer SQL Server Objects task. The source database of the task and the destination database of the task are on the same instance of SQL Server 2005. You set the following properties for the task:

  • DropObjectsFirst = True
  • CopySchema = True
  • CopyAllObjects = True

When you run the SSIS package, the logins of the instance of SQL Server 2005 are incorrectly deleted.

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 5. For more information about how to obtain this cumulative update package for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

943656 Cumulative update package 5 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

937137 The SQL Server 2005 builds that were released after SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 was released

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, set the value of the DropObjectsFirst property to "False" for the task.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

If the logins have been deleted after you run the SSIS package, you can use the sa account to log in to the instance of SQL Server. Then, you can restore the master database to restore the logins. Or, you can run a script to re-create the logins, and then you can map the logins to the database users. For more information about how to map the logins to the database users, visit the following Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site:

After you install this cumulative update package for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, the SSIS package reports the following error message in the scenario that is described in the "Symptoms" section:

DTS_W_PROBLEMOCCURREDWITHFOLLOWINGMESSAGE
A problem occurred with the following messages: "Logins are server level objects and can not be dropped first if the source and destination are the same server. Dropping objects first will remove the logins from the source as well."
Validation error. Transfer SQL Server Objects Task: There were errors during task validation.
