APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise X64 Edition

Bug #: 50001968 (SQL Hotfix)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install Cumulative Update 2 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. Cumulative Update 2 is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 936305.
  • You create a SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS) package that contains a Flat File source in a data flow task.
  • The Flat File that is imported to the Flat File source contains quoted text in a column.
  • The column that contains the quoted text has a column separator character.

In this scenario, you may receive error messages that resemble the following when you run the Integration Services package:

Error message 1

Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "ColumnName" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".

Error message 2

SSIS Error Code DTS_E_INDUCEDTRANSFORMFAILUREONERROR. The "output column " ColumnName" (537)" failed because error code 0xC0209084 occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column"ColumnName" (537)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a regression that was introduced in Cumulative Update 2 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2.

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 5. For more information about how to obtain this cumulative update package for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

943656 Cumulative update package 5 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. 937137 The SQL Server 2005 builds that were released after SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 was released

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, uninstall Cumulative Update 2 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2.

Note When you uninstall Cumulative Update 2 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, all other fixes that are included in the cumulative update package are also uninstalled.

In some cases, you can split the Flat File into some smaller files to work around this issue. However, this technique does not always work.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
