INTRODUCTION

An August 2007 daylight saving time (DST) update for Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices is available. This update replaces the February 2007 DST update for Windows Mobile-based devices.

This update specifically affects New Zealand and Western Australia. However, be aware that this update is cumulative. Additionally, this update replaces the previous DST update that was released for the United States.

Note The update that this article refers to can be found in the "References" section.

MORE INFORMATION

New Zealand

New Zealand will have three more weeks of DST starting on September 30, 2007. The New Zealand government extended the DST period to 27 weeks.

The DST dates changed as follows.

DST 2007 Previous years
Start date Last Sunday in September First Sunday in October
End date First Sunday in April Third Sunday in March

These changes are the first changes to DST since 1990.

Western Australia

DST was introduced in Western Australia for a three-year trial period that started in December 2006. The three-year trial period gives Western Australia an opportunity to try the new DST. A referendum will be held in 2009 to decide whether Western Australia will keep DST permanently.

In 2007 and in 2008, DST starts at 02:00 Western Time on the last Sunday in October. DST ends at 02:00 Western Time (03:00 daylight saving time) on the last Sunday in March of the following year.

This change brings Western Australia in line with most other Australian states and with most other Australian territories that have DST. This change means that businesses in Western Australia are no longer separated from their counterparts in the eastern states by an additional hour during the summer.

How to install the DST update

On some Windows Mobile devices, the DST change may not initialize after you apply the DST 2007 fall update. To make sure that the DST update works correctly on your device, change the default time zone on your device to a different time zone, and then change the time zone back to the time zone that you want.

To change the time zone setting on the Pocket PC phone, follow these steps:

  1. Use the appropriate link in the "References" section to obtain the update tool that corresponds to the way that you synchronize the device.
  2. Tap Start, and then tap Settings.
  3. Tap the System tab, and then tap Clock & Alarms.
  4. In the Home settings list, select a time zone.
  5. Tap OK to save the settings.

To change the time zone setting on a SmartPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Use the appropriate link in the "References" section to obtain the update tool that corresponds to the way that you synchronize the device.
  2. Click Start, and then click Settings.
  3. Click Clock & Alarm, and then click Date and Time.
  4. In the list, select a time zone.
  5. Click Done to save the settings.

Note Your device automatically returns to the default local time zone if local network time is enabled on the device.

Note For more information for devices that are running software that was released before Windows Mobile 5.0, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Installation notes

You can install the daylight saving time update on either the device or the storage card. After you install the update, select a different time zone, and then reselect your time zone to initialize the daylight savings time update.
