The names and the IP addresses of client computers are not logged when you enable auditing for a site collection in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

Article ID: 939246

Article Last Modified on 8/10/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

SYMPTOMS

You enable auditing for a site collection in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. However, the names and the IP addresses of client computers are not logged during the auditing process. You experience the following symptoms:

  • When you view the audit reports, you do not see any information logged about the names or the IP addresses of client computers that accessed the site collection.
  • When you view the AuditData table in the content database of the Web application, the values in the MachineIP column and in the MachineName column appear as NULL.

CAUSE

The values in the MachineIP column and in the MachineName column appear as NULL because of privacy concerns. By design, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 works in this manner.

MORE INFORMATION

The MachineIP column in the AuditData table of the content database represents the IP address of the client computer from which the audited action was performed. The MachineName column in the AuditData table of the content database represents the name of the client computer from which the audited action was performed. Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 does not log this data.
