SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or a SQL Server SP2-based hotfix, the installation stops unexpectedly. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You use SQL Server 2005 in a clustered environment.
  • The SQL Server cluster contains many nodes.
  • The SQL Server cluster contains many SQL Server instances.

When this problem occurs, the installation process does not send some scheduled tasks to the remote nodes. Some instances of SQL Server are not updated. On the active node, you receive error messages that resemble the following in the Hotfix.log file:

<Date> Task Scheduler: Error, cannot create new scheduled task for product instance target \\<NodeName>
<Date> Task Scheduler: Error, cannot create scheduled task for product instance target \\<NodeName>
<Date> Task Scheduler: Error, cannot save new scheduled task for product instance

Note In these error messages, NodeName represents the name of the node that the error affects.

Additionally, when you try to install a SQL Server SP2-based hotfix, an access violation occurs on the Hotfix.exe file. A hotfix.dmp file is created in the following folder:

SQLServer\90\Setup Bootstrap\Log\Hotfix

Note In this example, SQLServer represents the name of the folder in which SQL Server is installed.
