You receive the “This item has expired” error message on the Zune device or the “The device does not support synchronization of subscription content” error message in the Zune software

SYMPTOMS

You experience the following symptoms:

  • When you try to play content that you downloaded from Zune Marketplace, you receive the following error message on the Zune device:

    This item has expired

  • When you try to synchronize content that you downloaded from Zune Marketplace, you receive the following error message in the Zune software:

    The device does not support synchronization of subscription content.


CAUSE

This problem can occur if an application that supports transferring data to a Zune device or to a Windows Media portable device was running during the installation of hotfix KB929399. The installation of the hotfix was not completed correctly.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:

    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\msscp.dll

  3. Start the Zune software.
  4. Connect the Zune device by using a Zune Sync Cable.
  5. In the navigation pane on the left side, click Album or Songs under the name of your Zune device.
  6. Locate the album or the song that exhibits the behavior that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, right-click the album or the song, and then click Delete.

    Note If you want to select multiple albums or multiple songs, press and hold the CTRL key as you click each album or each song. Right-click the selected items, and then click Delete. If you want to select all the files, click one album or one song, and then press CTRL+A. Right-click the selected items, and then click Delete.

    You receive the following message:

    Are you sure you want to delete the selected items from device name?

  7. Click OK.
  8. In the navigation pane on the left side, click Album or Songs under Library.
  9. Locate the album or the song that you removed from the device, right-click the album or the song, and then click Add to Sync list.
  10. In the list pane, click Start Sync.
  11. When the sync is complete, disconnect the Zune device.
