Data that is written to a CD-R disc on a Windows XP SP1a-based computer cannot be read on a Windows Vista-based computer

Article ID: 933486

Article Last Modified on 6/7/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Enterprise
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Ultimate

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. On a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a)-based computer, you write data to a CD-R disc. However, this CD-R disc cannot be read on a Windows Vista-based computer.

Note The CD-R disc can be read on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if Windows XP SP1a writes to the CD-R disc by using a "track start" address that is off by one address.

Note This behavior may occur because of an error during the writing process.

Windows Vista cannot locate the data if the address is off by one address.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
