Error message when you start Encarta 2006 on a Windows XP SP2-based computer: "Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 is not installed in this computer"

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Encarta 2006 on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, you may receive one of the following error messages even though Macromedia Flash Player is already installed:

Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 is not installed in this computer. Click Change in Add or Remove Programs or Add or Remove Application from Control Panel to execute setup again, select Restore. Then follow the steps on the screen and install Flash.

Macromedia Shockwave Player 10 is not installed in this computer. Click Change in Add or Remove Programs or Add or Remove Application from Control Panel to execute setup again, select Restore. Then follow the steps on the screen and install Shockwave.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the MS06-020 (913433) security fix is installed on a Windows XP SP2-based computer. The MS06-020 security fix prevents Macromedia Flash Player or earlier versions of Adobe Flash Player from installing.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the currently installed version of Macromedia Flash Player or Adobe Flash Player. Then install the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Remove Macromedia Flash Player or remove Adobe Flash Player.
