An incorrect character appears in an Easy Assist remote session when you use the keyboard to type a character

SYMPTOMS

When you participate in an Easy Assist remote session, and you or the remote user tries typing a character by using the keyboard, the character does not appear. Instead, an incorrect character appears in Easy Assist. Or, a function is unexpectedly started.

CAUSE

This issue occurs primarily on portable computers or on keyboards that have multiple functions assign to each key.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. In Easy Assist, click Exit and End Session.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  3. Click Microsoft Easy Assist in the list of installed programs, and then click Remove. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove the program from the computer.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Unlock the special key functions, To do this, use one of the following methods:
    • Press Fn + SCROLL LOCK
    • Press SHIFT + F11
  6. Verify that the keyboard functions as expected.

If the problem persists, follow these steps:

  1. Remove any keyboard software that is present on the computer.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Create a new user profile.

  4. Use System Restore to restore the computer to a previously saved state.

  5. Verify that the keyboard functions as expected.
