Error message when you try to add a Media Center Extender to a Windows Vista-based Media Center computer: "Extender Communication Error"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a Media Center Extender to a Windows Vista-based Media Center computer, you receive the following error message:

Extender Communication Error
An error occurred while communicating with the Extender. Restart your Extender, get a new setup key, and try setup again.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you enter a setup key that matches a setup key that has already been entered for another Media Center Extender on the computer.

THINGS TO TRY

1. Turn off all the Media Center Extenders except for the Extender that you want to configure.
2. Try to add the Extender again.

MORE INFORMATION

Although it is possible, it is unlikely that different Media Center Extenders will have the same setup key.
