SYMPTOMS
When you create a universally unique identifier (UUID) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, the UUID that you create is only unique on the local computer. This problem occurs if a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0-based device is connected to the computer by using a USB connector.
Specifically, if you use the UuidCreateSequential function to create a UUID, the UuidCreateSequential function returns an RPC_S_UUID_LOCAL_ONLY value. This value indicates that the UUID is guaranteed to be unique only on the local computer. If you use the Uuidgen.exe tool to create a UUID, the Uuidgen.exe tool returns a UUID, and the Uuidgen.exe tool displays the following warning message:
Note This problem does not occur if a Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003-based device is connected to the computer.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the connection to the Windows Mobile 5.0-based device creates a Remote Network Driver Interface Specification (RNDIS) adapter. The RNDIS adapter is a pseudo-network adapter. This RNDIS adapter contains a media access control (MAC) address that is not universally unique. The UuidCreateSequential function incorrectly uses this MAC address to generate the UUID.

To work around this problem, disconnect the Windows Mobile 5.0-based device when you create the UUID.
