SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You create a Microsoft Word document (.doc) in Microsoft Word 2000. You save the document as a .docx file in Microsoft Office Word 2007. Then, you reopen the document in Word 2007. In this scenario, the balloons for tracked changes in the document display the user name Unknown.

Note This problem does not occur if the Word document is created in Microsoft Office Word 2003 or in Microsoft Word 2002.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, save Word document in the .doc file format in Word 2007.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Create a new document in Word 2000.
  2. Type Hello in the document.
  3. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, click a bullet type, and then click OK.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Track Changes, click Track changes while editing, and then click OK.
  5. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, click a different bullet type, and then click OK.
  6. Save the document as Bullets1.doc.
  7. Start Word 2007.
  8. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.
  9. In the Open dialog box, click Bullets1.doc, and then click Open.
  10. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Save as.
  11. In the Save As dialog box, click Word Document in the Save as type list to save the document as Bullets1.docx, and then click Save.
  12. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Exit Word.
  13. Reopen the Bullets1.docx file in Word 2007.
  14. Point to the "Hello" text to display the balloon for the tracked change.


Notice that the balloon for the tracked change displays the user name Unknown.
