SYMPTOMS
When a desktop configuration refresh is performed from the Microsoft SoftGrid Client, you experience one of the following problems:
- SoftGrid-enabled program icons appear as the default program icon.
- SoftGrid-enabled program icons appear as the default Windows icon.
- SoftGrid-enabled program icons do not appear at all.
CAUSE
This problem may occur because one of the following conditions is true.
Condition 1
The program icon path is configured incorrectly.
To verify this problem, follow these steps:
- In Administrative Tools, open the SoftGrid Client Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.
- Double-click the application that experiences this problem.
- Click the General tab.
Verify that one of the following conditions is true:
- The Icon Path setting is a UNC path. However, the path is invalid. For example, the path contains a spelling error or backslashes (\) are entered as slash marks (/).
- The Icon Path setting is a UNC path. However, the Everyone group does not have at least Read file permissions to the icon file.
- The Icon Path setting is a UNC path. However, the icon file does not exist in the UNC share.
- The Icon Path setting is an HTTP path. However, the path is invalid. For example, the path contains a spelling error or backslashes (\) are entered as slash marks (/).
- The Icon Path setting is an HTTP path. However, the Everyone group does not have at least Read file permissions to the icon file on the HTTP server.
- The Icon Path setting is an HTTP path. However, the icon file does not exist in the virtual directory on the HTTP server.
- The Icon Path setting is an HTTP path. However, anonymous access is not enabled for the icon file on the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) server.
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- In Administrative Tools, open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Expand Internet Information Server, expand the server, and then expand the virtual directory.
- Right-click the icon file, and then click Properties.
- Click the File Security tab.
- Under Anonymous access and authentication control, click Edit.
- Click to select the Anonymous Access check box.
- Click OK two times.
- The Icon Path setting is an HTTP path. However, the "http" part of the path is capitalized incorrectly. To resolve this problem, change this part of the path from "HTTP" or "Http" to "http".
Condition 2
SoftGrid Client is configured to use a proxy server, and the Bypass proxy server for local addresses option is not enabled. To verify this problem, open the Internet Options dialog box in SoftGrid Client. On the Connections tab, verify that the SoftGrid Client is configured to use a proxy server and that the Bypass proxy server for local addresses is cleared.
Condition 3
The Web server MIME types are not configured to allow for .osd files.
To verify this, follow these steps:
- In Administrative Tools, open the SoftGrid Client Management MMC snap-in.
- Double-click the application that experiences this behavior.
- On the General tab, determine whether the OSD Path field is configured to use an HTTP path. If so, go to step 4. If not, this condition is not true.
- Close the SoftGrid Client Management MMC snap-in.
- In Administrative Tools, open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- Expand Web Sites, and then expand Default Web Site.
- Right-click the content virtual directory, and then click Properties.
- Click the HTTP Headers tab.
- Click MIME Types.
- Click New.
- In the Extension box, type .OSD.
- In the MIME type box, type application/softricity-osd.
- Click OK until the changes have been committed.
Condition 4
The icon is incompatible with the operating system on which SoftGrid Client runs.
For example, the application was sequenced on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer. Then, the application was published to a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer. In this case, the icon that is extracted during sequencing may only display in Windows XP and not in Windows 2000.
To confirm that this condition is true, manually copy the .ico file to the operating system on which SoftGrid Client is running. If the icon appears, this condition is not true.
To obtain an icon that is compatible with the operating system, use one of the following methods:
- Create a new sequence on the target operating system. In this example, create a new sequence in Windows 2000. Obtain the program icon, and then discard the new package.
- Copy the .sft and .osd files to the target operating system. Do not copy the .ico file to the target operating system. Open the existing sequence, run the Shortcut Wizard, and then save the sequence. Then, obtain the program icon, and discard the new package.
- Use a third-party utility to extract the icon from the executable file.
Condition 5
The user who performs the desktop configuration refresh does not have Read permissions to the following registry keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.osdHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SoftGrid.osd.File
Condition 6
Multiple applications that have the same name and the same version exist in the SoftGrid environment. However, these applications are in a different suite.
