Article ID: 931853

Article Last Modified on 2/6/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, the screen saver Wait setting is turned off even though you do not configure the Screen Saver timeout Group Policy object (GPO) setting.

Note To locate the screen saver Wait setting, right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Screen Saver tab.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you use a long file name in the Screen Saver executable name GPO setting.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Expand User Configuration, and then expand Administrative Templates.
  3. Expand Control Panel, and then click Display.
  4. In the results pane, double-click Screen Saver executable name, and then type a file name in the Screen Saver executable name box that complies with the 8.3 file name format.

Note In the 8.3 file name format, the file name must be no more than eight characters long. Additionally, the file name must have a valid three-character extension following the period, such as .scr for a screen saver file.

  1. Click Apply, and then click OK.
