COMMAND+OPTION+SPACEBAR Doesn't Work with System 7.1

Article ID: Q93158
Creation Date: 24-NOV-1992
Revision Date: 10-SEP-1996 The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.1

SYMPTOMS

In Word for the Macintosh, the key combination to insert a paragraph above a table row, COMMAND+OPTION+SPACEBAR, does not work with Macintosh System version 7.1 if the "U.S.-System 6" keyboard layout is installed, even if this layout is not active. Other COMMAND+OPTION key combinations are not affected.

CAUSE

System 7.1 automatically installs the "U.S.-System 6" keyboard layout. You must remove this layout if you want the COMMAND+OPTION+SPACEBAR key combination to function in Word for the Macintosh.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, choose either of the following methods:

Method 1. Assign a different keystroke to the Insert Paragraph Above Row

          command. To do this,

          a. Click Commands on the Tools menu.

          b. In the list of commands, select Insert Paragraph Above Row.

          c. Click the Add button.

          d. Type the keystroke that you would like to assign to this
             command, such as CONTROL+OPTION+COMMAND+SPACEBAR.

          e. Click Close.

Method 2. Remove the "U.S.-System 6" keyboard layout:

          a. Open the keyboard control panel from the Control Panels
folder. You may have 2 options: "U.S." or "U.S.-System 6"

          b. Quit all open applications.

          c. Select the "U.S." keyboard layout and close the keyboard
             control panel.

          d. Open the System Suitcase in the System folder.

          e. Drag the "U.S.-System 6" keyboard layout out of the System
             Suitcase.

The keyboard shortcut will now work correctly in Word. You do not have to restart the Macintosh.
