SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Office Communicator Web Access to log on to Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005 Service Pack 1, you receive the following error message:

The server is unavailable. Please sign in again or contact your system administrator.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the password of the Communicator Web Access service account has changed or has expired. Therefore, the Communicator Web Access service uses an incorrect password to try to start.

RESOLUTION

If the password of the Communicator Web Access service account has already expired, reset the password in the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. Then, change the password in the Communicator Web Access application pool to reflect the reset password. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. In the console tree, expand <ComputerName>, expand Application Pools, right-click W3SVC175074822 - <PoolName>, and then click Properties.


Note <ComputerName> represents the name of your computer. <PoolName> represents the pool name of Communicator Web Access.

  1. Click the Identity tab, and then make sure that the Configurable option is enabled.
  2. In the User name box, type the user account under which you want Communicator Web Access to run.
  3. In the Password box, type the password for the account that you specified in step 4.
  4. Re-type the password in the Confirm Password dialog box, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.
