Error message when you use the Online Media feature of Media Center Extender on a Windows Vista-based computer: "Video Error"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Online Media or Internet TV features of Media Center Extender on a Windows Vista-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly, please restart windows media center or restart the computer

CAUSE

This problem is caused when a network router blocks the network packets that are sent by an online service to deliver media content such as movies or music. Some network routers block various media-based network packets that are sent by some online services.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install update 938126 for Windows Vista, and then manually change the Windows Vista registry settings for Online Media.

To download the Windows Vista Update

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

For x86-based versions of Windows Vista
Download the 938126 package now.

For x64-based versions of Windows Vista
Download the 938126 package now.

To update the registry

Click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaCenterPeripheral
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
Type MFNETSOURCE_DISABLE_UDP, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
Type 0, and then click OK.
Exit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
