SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Online Media or Internet TV features of Media Center Extender on a Windows Vista-based computer, you may receive the following error message:

Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly, please restart windows media center or restart the computer

CAUSE

This problem is caused when a network router blocks the network packets that are sent by an online service to deliver media content such as movies or music. Some network routers block various media-based network packets that are sent by some online services.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install update 938126 for Windows Vista, and then manually change the Windows Vista registry settings for Online Media.

To update the registry

  1. Click Start [GRAPHIC: Start button ], type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    [GRAPHIC: User Account Control permission] If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaCenterPeripheral

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  4. Type MFNETSOURCE_DISABLE_UDP, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. Type 0, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
