SYMPTOMS
When you unplug the AC power from a portable computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the battery power drains more quickly than you expect. Therefore, the operating system shuts down prematurely.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
- The portable computer cannot enter the deep "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface" (ACPI) processor idle sleep states (C-states).
This issue occurs when the USB 2.0 driver lets the asynchronous scheduler component run continuously. This action prevents the processor from entering the C-states.
C-states save power when the processor is not busy. C-states range from C0 to C4. Typically, an idle portable computer uses the C3 state and the C4 state to preserve battery power. If an idle portable computer cannot enter or maintain the C3 state or the C4 state, the battery power drains more quickly.
To resolve this issue, install the download that is available in this article.
- The USB host controller cannot turn off.
Typically, this issue occurs when a device is removed from a nested USB hub that is attached to the host controller. The host controller does not recognize the device removal. Therefore, the host controller cannot turn off. The processor cannot enter the C-states.
You cannot resolve this issue by installing the download that is available in this article. To resolve this issue, contact Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS).
- The USB host controller uses the periodic scheduler for USB devices.
This issue typically occurs when a device that relies on the periodic scheduler is attached to the host controller. This device may be an isochronous (isoch) device, such as an audio device. Alternatively, this device may be an interrupt device, such as a mouse device or a keyboard device.
You cannot resolve this issue by installing the download that is available in this article. To resolve this issue, contact CSS.
Note Various factors can affect the battery power for portable computers. Therefore, there may not be any improvement in battery power after you install the download that is available in this article.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
