SYMPTOMS

When you use the "Backup and Restore Center" Control Panel item to back up files and folders in Windows Vista, you receive the following message:

Label and insert a blank disk

Please write the following label on a blank disk and insert it into drive:\

ComputerName Date Time Disk 1

If you click File backup needs attention in the notification area, you receive the following error message:

The disk in the drive cannot be written to.

Please write the following label on a blank disk and insert it into drive:\

ComputerName Date Time Disk 1

You experience this behavior even if the CD drive or the DVD drive contains a writable disc.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you use the "Backup and Restore Center" item to back up files and folders on CD media that already contains data or on DVD media that already contains data.

To help provide a reliable backup, the "Backup and Restore Center" item does not support using media to which data has previously been written.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, insert a new blank media in the CD drive or in the DVD drive when you use the "Backup and Restore Center" item to back up files and folders in Windows Vista.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
