INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to change the log on account for the Microsoft SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service.

MORE INFORMATION

By default the log on account for the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service is the Local System (SYSTEM) account. Some environments may require that this account be changed.

Prerequisites

To change the account, the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service must be stopped and started. This step causes the SoftGrid Client to close the connection with the server. This process causes the SoftGrid-enabled applications to do one of the following things:

• Exit Minimal Disconnected Operation (MDO) mode
• Enter MDO mode

Therefore, we recommend that you close all client sessions before you continue.

How to configure the registry

The account requires Read permissions to the Softricity registry keys.

1. Start Registry Editor.
2. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Softricity.
3. Right-click Softricity, and then click Permissions.
4. Add the account, and then grant the account Read permissions.
5. Exit Registry Editor.

By default, the SoftGrid server key and the subkeys are configured to inherit permissions from the parent key. If this feature has been disabled, the account must be added to each subkey.

How to configure the local security policy

If the SoftGrid Virtual Application server is a Microsoft Windows 2000-based server, the account must be added to the "Act as part of the operating system" local security policy. This step is not required for Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Local Security Policy.
2. Expand Security Settings, expand Local Policies, and then expand User Rights Assignment.
3. Right-click Act as part of the operating system, and then click Properties.
4. Add the account, and then click OK.
5. Exit Local Security Policy

How to configure the security permissions and the share permissions

The account requires Read security permissions to the content directory. The account requires Modify security permissions to the logs directory.

Step 1: Determine the paths

1. Start Registry Editor.
2. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Softricity\SoftGrid Server\CurrentVersion.
3. Right-click SOFTRICITY_SOFTGRID_CONTENT_DIR, and then click Modify.
4. Note the path of the content directory, and then click Cancel.
5. Right-click SOFTRICITY_SOFTGRID_LOG_DIR, and then click Modify.
6. Note the path of the logs directory, and then click Cancel.
7. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 2: Apply the permissions

1. Start Windows Explorer.
2. Locate the content directory that you noted in step 4 earlier in the "Step 1: Determine the paths" section.
3. Right-click the content folder, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Security tab.
5. Add the account, grant the account Read permissions, and then click OK.
6. Locate the logs directory that you noted in step 6 earlier in the "Step 1: Determine the paths" section.
7. Right-click the logs folder, and then click Properties.
8. Click the Security tab.
9. Add the account, grant the account Modify permissions, and then click OK.
10. Exit Windows Explorer.

Step 3: Configure Read Share permissions

If the path of the content directory is a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path, the account requires Read Share permissions.

1. Start Windows Explorer.
2. Locate the content directory that you noted in step 4 earlier in the "Step 1: Determine the paths" section.
3. Right-click the content folder, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Sharing tab.
5. Add the account, grant the account Read permissions, and then click OK.
6. Exit Windows Explorer.

How to configure the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service

The SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service must be configured to use the account.

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
2. Right-click SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Log On tab.
4. In the Log on as section, click This account.
5. In the This account box, type the account.
6. In the Password box and in the Confirm password box, type the account password, and then click OK.
7. Right-click SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, and then click Stop.
8. Right-click SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, and then click Start.
9. Exit Services.
