Error message when you try to install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server: "General network error"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, you receive the following error message:

An error occurred while attempting to connect to the database:
([Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]General network error. Check your network documentation.)

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the database server is running Microsoft SQL Server 2005. By default, SQL Server 2005 disables the TCP/IP protocol for the server instance.

To determine whether the TCP/IP protocol is disabled, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  2. In the console tree, expand SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration, and then click Protocols for MSSQLSERVER.
  3. In the details pane, examine the Status column for the TCP/IP item.
