SYMPTOMS

After you enable the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature in Windows Vista, you may receive a "Stop 0x0000007E" error message that resembles the following:

STOP 0x0000007E (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

CAUSE

The problem may occur when certain drivers, such as a chipset driver, are installed on the computer before you enable the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.
