SYMPTOMS

You have a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. You have one or more NTFS file system volumes on the computer. You have a third-party driver installed on the computer. When you try to open files on a NTFS file system volume, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Your computer automatically restarts.
  • After you log on, you receive the following error message:

    Microsoft Windows
    The system has recovered from a serious error.
    A log of this error has been created.
    Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
    We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Microsoft Windows. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
    To see what data this error report contains, click here.

    If the error message still appears, and if you want to see the data that the error report contains, click the click here link at the bottom of the message box. Then, you see error signature information that may resemble the following:

  • You receive the following "Stop" error message:

    A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

  • An event ID 1003 entry with information that resembles the following is logged in the System log:

Notes

  • Four parameters (BCP1, BCP2, BCP3, and BCP4) are included in the error signature information and in the parentheses of the technical information for the Stop error. These parameters may vary according to the computer's configuration.

  • The parameter values in this error message may vary according to your computer's configuration. However, in this particular instance, the first parameter is always "C0000005."


CAUSE

This problem occurs because the third-party driver may prevent you from opening files successfully on a NTFS file system volume. The NTFS file system volume expects a non-null value for stream control block (SCB). However, this value is null.
