The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Macintosh, version 5.1

SUMMARY

In Word for the Macintosh, the following error message may occur when you save your Standard Glossary:

File is in use by another application.

This error occurs when you attempt to replace a previous version of your Standard Glossary file while running Macintosh Operating System version 6.0.x and Finder. This problem does not occur if you are using MultiFinder, if you save any glossary file other than the Standard Glossary, or if you are running version 7.0 or later of the Macintosh Operating System software.

MORE INFORMATION

This error often occurs when you quit Word and attempt to replace the current Standard Glossary file with a new Standard Glossary.

Workarounds

To avoid the problem, save the Standard Glossary to another location on the hard disk. Switch to Finder and drag the new Standard Glossary icon into the appropriate Word folder. Choose the OK button when the system asks if you want to replace the existing Standard Glossary file.

 -or-

Save the glossary under a different name in your Word folder. To use this as the active glossary, double-click the glossary file icon to start Word. If you change the glossary and save changes, no error message occurs. For information on creating a new glossary file in Word, see page 259 of "Microsoft Word User's Guide." Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word for Macintosh version 5.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
