SYMPTOMS

When you try to configure a remote procedure call (RPC) over HTTP connection in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, you are not prompted for a user name or a password when you connect to the /rpc virtual directory.

Additionally, you do not receive an HTTP 403.2 error message as expected. Instead, you receive a blank page.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the /rpc virtual directory Web page returns an HTTP 413 error code.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must change the settings in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on the computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand Web Sites, right-click Default Web Site, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Directory Security tab, click Edit in the Secure communications area.
  4. Click Ignore client certificates, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK again, and then exit IIS Manager.
