You receive the error message 0029-80070643 when you try to install Windows Live OneCare

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Windows Live OneCare, you receive the following error message that has the error code 0029-80070643:

Cleanup error
Error while cleaning up OneCare install

CAUSE

One or more Windows Live OneCare components could not be uninstalled from the computer. This issue is usually related to a previous installation of OneCare that is damaged or is incompatible with the current operating system version.

Note If you receive this error message together with the Windows Live OneCare installation error message 0019-80070643, visit the following Web site to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

RESOLUTION

  1. Restart the computer, and then try the installation again. If you receive the same error message, go to step 2.
  2. To uninstall all versions of Windows Live OneCare, use Add or Remove Programs in Microsoft Windows XP or use Uninstall or change a program in Windows Vista:

    Windows Vista
    1. Click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], type programs and features in the Start Search box, and then click Programs and Features in the Programs list.
    2. In the list of programs, click Windows Live OneCare, and then click Uninstall.
    3. If you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the program, click Yes.

    Windows XP

    1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. In the list of programs, click Windows Live OneCare, and then click Remove.
    3. If you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the program, click Yes.

    Note If there are no earlier versions of OneCare installed, go to step 4.

  3. Restart the computer, and then try the installation again.
  4. Download and install the OneCare cleanup utility. To access the utility, visit the following Web site:
  5. Run the OneCare cleanup utility.
  6. Restart the computer, and then try the installation again.
