SYMPTOMS

In Windows Vista or in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you experience poor performance when you view images by using the Slide Show feature in Windows Photo Gallery or in Windows Live Photo Gallery. For example, transitions between the images may be choppy.

CAUSE

This issue can occur can occur if the monitor is set to a resolution of 1900x1200 pixels or higher.

RESOLUTION

You may be able to resolve this issue if you obtain and install the latest drivers for your video card. For information about how to contact computer hardware vendors, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this issue, modify the Windows registry to start the Slide Show feature by using a lower resolution. To do this, follow these steps.

Windows Vista

Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
Click Continue.
Locate and then click the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery\SlideShow

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type WinSATScore, and then press ENTER.
Right-click WinSATScore, click Modify, click Decimal, type the value that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Note To start the Slide Show feature by using different resolutions, type one of the following values in the Value data box, as appropriate for your situation:

- For a resolution of 1200x1000 pixels, type 300.
- For a resolution of 1600x1200 pixels, type 400.
- For a full-screen resolution, type 500.
Exit Registry Editor.

Windows XP SP2

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery\SlideShow

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type WinSATScore, and then press ENTER.
Right-click WinSATScore, click Modify, click Decimal, type the value that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Note To start the Slide Show feature by using different resolutions, type one of the following values in the Value data box, as appropriate for your situation:

- For a resolution of 1200x1000 pixels, type 300.
- For a resolution of 1600x1200 pixels, type 400.
- For a full-screen resolution, type 500.
Exit Registry Editor.

MORE INFORMATION

To reproduce this issue, start the Slide Show feature on a monitor that supports a display resolution of 1900x1200 or higher. Use a video card that has Windows Experience Index scores of 5 or more in the Gaming and graphic-intensive programs sub-category.

Note Video cards can run the Slide Show feature at high resolutions when they have Windows Experience Index scores of 5 or more in the Gaming and graphic-intensive programs sub-category. However, such cards may exhibit the issues that are mentioned in the Symptoms section.
