Article ID: 930011

Article Last Modified on 11/5/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You use the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack Update package to try to upgrade a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a) to a different operating system. However, the upgrade operation is unsuccessful. You experience one of the following symptoms:

  • The following information is logged in the OSDLaunch.log file:
    CHECK FAILED: hMap != 0 (Error = 80070003)
    Failed to create/open shared environment (800700B7)
    CHECK FAILED: initialize() (Error = 800700B7)
    CHECK FAILED: engine.setParameter( EngineParam::PackageSource, m_sImagePath ) (Error = 800700B7)
    CHECK FAILED: ImageDownloadInfo.InitializeEngine() (Error = 800700B7)
    OS Deployment advertisement failed to install OS Deployment agent!. Code 0x800700b7
    Note This log may be created on the affected client computer. This occurs if the operating system deployment files are staged to the client computer before the operating system deployment package runs. For example, if the C:\StageNT\Archive_OSD.sms file is located on the client computer, this log file is created in the C:\StageNT\SMSOSD\OSDLogs folder.
  • You receive the following error message:

    OSDAgent.exe - Entry Point Not Found
    The procedure entry point GetFileSizeEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack Update does not support upgrading from Windows NT 4.0.

The SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack Update program uses the Wimgapi.dll Windows Vista file. This file uses APIs that Windows NT 4.0 does not support.

MORE INFORMATION

Although the Readme.htm file that is included with the SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack Update indicates that you can use this feature pack to upgrade a Windows NT 4.0-based computer, this feature pack does not support upgrading from Windows NT 4.0 to a later operating system.
