The Zune software no longer detects the Zune device after you update the Zune software

SYMPTOMS

After you update the Zune software to the current version, the Zune software may no longer detect the Zune device.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the device driver from software version 1.0 is still installed on the computer.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Remove the old device driver, and then reinstall the new device driver. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Connect the Zune device to the computer.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
    3. Under Portable Devices, locate Zune.
    4. Right-click Zune, click Uninstall, and then click OK.
    5. Right-click the root of the device tree, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
    6. In the Found New Hardware wizard, click Install the software automatically (Recommended), and then click Next.
    7. After the driver installation is complete, click Finish.

To determine the version of the device driver that is installed on the computer, follow these steps:

  1. Connect the Zune device to the computer.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  3. Under Portable Devices, locate Zune.
  4. Right-click Zune, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Driver tab.
  6. The version of the device driver appears on the Driver Version line.
