How to help the Windows Live Hotmail support team collect Fiddler traces

SUMMARY

This article describes how to download and run the Fiddler tool to capture valuable data. Additionally, this article describes how to send the data that you collect by using the Fiddler tool to the Windows Live Hotmail support team.

Note The Fiddler tool is an HTTP Debugging Proxy that logs all HTTP traffic between a computer and the Internet. This tool lets us look directly at the raw traffic that is moving between a computer and the servers.

To better help you, make sure that we know the version of Windows Live Hotmail that you are using. To find the version number for Windows Live Hotmail, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that Windows Live Hotmail is open.
  2. In the gray menu bar at the top, click Help.
  3. At the end of the list, click About Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail.
  4. Note your version number. Include this number in any communications with the Technical Support Team.

To download and use the Fiddler tool, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the following Web site: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information.
  2. Click Visit the Fiddler Download Page, and then click Get Fiddler.
  3. Click Install Fiddler.

    This should open a window that requests that you download a file.
  4. Click Save, and then save the file to the desktop.
  5. After the file is downloaded, double-click FiddlerSetup.exe on the desktop.
  6. Read the License Agreement, and then click I Agree.
  7. Click Install.
  8. After the installation is complete, click Close.
  9. Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Fiddler to open the Fiddler program.

The Fiddler tool is now logging. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then re-create the problem for which you contacted support.

After you reproduce the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Return to the Fiddler program, it should still be running.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  3. On the File menu, point to Save, point to Session(s), and then click As Zip.
  4. Name the file fiddlerlog.zip, and then save the file to the desktop.

After you collect the data by using the Fiddler tool, you can remove the Fiddler tool. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Select Fiddler, click Change/Remove, and then click Uninstall.
