SYMPTOMS
After you install Windows Vista with BitLocker Drive Encryption (BitLocker), a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 1.1 device is not available. Instead, a red question mark appears next to the device in Device Manager. When you try to use Windows Update to download a TPM 1.1 device driver, no TPM 1.1 device driver is available.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because Windows Vista does not support TPM 1.1 hardware. TPM 1.1 does not provide the level of security that Windows Vista requires. Therefore, a universal Windows Vista TPM 1.1 driver is not available. Windows Vista does not recognize TPM 1.1 hardware.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use TPM version 1.2 hardware and the Windows Vista TPM 1.2 device driver.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, you can try to use BitLocker in USB-only mode.

MORE INFORMATION
In response to better standardization in the TPM industry, Microsoft has produced a universal TPM 1.2 driver for Windows Vista. This driver works with all TPM 1.2 hardware.
Third-party TPM 1.1 and TPM 1.2 drivers may be available. However, Microsoft does not guarantee the security or stability of these third-party drivers. We recommend that you install the Windows Vista TPM 1.2 driver.
